No job gets done if it can't be done safely. This is not a tagline — it is the operating principle every crew member is trained to live by, on every site, every day.
Hard Reach Environmental operates in environments that are genuinely dangerous — steep slopes, confined spaces, biohazard material, unstable terrain, and sites where the wrong decision can have serious consequences. That reality doesn't make safety harder. It makes it more essential.
Our zero-harm philosophy means that safety is embedded into every stage of every project — not bolted on at the end as an afterthought. Site assessment identifies hazards before any worker is deployed. Written safety plans are prepared for every job, briefed to the entire crew, and available on-site throughout. If conditions change mid-project, work stops until a revised assessment is complete and communicated.
We hold ourselves to this standard because we believe it's the only acceptable way to operate in complex, high-risk environments — and because our municipal and commercial clients demand it. When you hire Hard Reach Environmental, you get a contractor who will hand you documentation proving the job was done safely, not just quickly.
Every job begins with a site-specific written safety plan. It's not a template — it reflects the actual conditions, hazards, and controls for that specific site. Crew briefing is documented before work begins.
Every working day begins with a field-level hazard assessment (FLHA). New hazards — ground conditions, weather, changing access — are identified and controls are updated before work resumes.
Every worker has the authority — and the obligation — to stop work if they observe an unsafe condition. There is no pressure to continue. Safety concerns are reviewed on the spot, and work resumes only when the issue is resolved.
Our certifications aren't decorations. They're the baseline standard every crew member is held to. Certificates are maintained current and available to clients upon request before any project begins.
All Hard Reach Environmental crew members are covered under WSIB Schedule 1. A current clearance certificate is available to clients and main contractors on request for every project. We maintain zero arrears — always current, always compliant.
All crew working in confined or restricted spaces hold current Confined Space Entry certification. Operations include pre-entry atmospheric testing (O₂, CO, H₂S, LEL), documented entry permits, and a trained rescue standby. No entry occurs without a documented, signed permit.
Crew trained in biohazard waste identification, containment, and regulated disposal. Sharps handling follows approved container protocols under Ontario Reg. 558/00. Double-bagging, labelling, and manifest documentation are standard on every biohazard job.
Slope and vertical access operations follow established rope access techniques with redundant anchor systems and load-tested rigging. All descent and haul operations are conducted with a qualified supervisor on-site at all times. No improvised rigging — ever.
Every project has a designated first aid attendant with Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification. Emergency response plans are written for each site, including evacuation routes, emergency contact lists, and nearest hospital/trauma centre identification.
Hard Reach Environmental carries a minimum $5,000,000 Commercial General Liability policy. Certificates of insurance naming the client as additional insured are provided upon request before any project mobilizes. We don't cut corners on coverage.
All operations in or near regulated natural features comply with the Endangered Species Act (ESA), Conservation Authorities Act, and Ontario's Environmental Protection Act. Regulatory permits are secured before work begins on any regulated or sensitive site.
All crew members hold current WHMIS 2015 (GHS) certification. Hazardous materials on site are identified, labelled, and handled per SDS requirements. Spill kits are standard equipment on every mobilization — we don't assume a site is clean.
Our safety management system includes regular internal safety audits, incident reporting and near-miss documentation, and JHSC-certified safety representatives. Lessons learned from every project inform our procedures — continuous improvement, not complacency.
Safety is built into the structure of how we work, not layered on top of it. Here is the exact sequence we follow on every Hard Reach Environmental project, from first contact to close-out.
Before quoting any project, a senior team member walks the site. Slope angles, access points, waste types, confined space risks, and environmental sensitivities are all documented. Nothing is assumed from a phone call or a photo.
A written, site-specific safety plan is prepared for every project. It identifies all hazards, control measures, PPE requirements, emergency procedures, and regulatory considerations for that exact site. No generic templates — every plan reflects the real conditions.
Before any work begins on day one, the entire crew is briefed on the safety plan. Hazards are identified, controls are explained, emergency procedures are reviewed, and every worker acknowledges the plan. This briefing is documented.
Every shift begins with a FLHA conducted by the crew lead. Changing conditions — ground softening after rain, new hazards discovered during excavation, altered access — are identified and controlled before work resumes each day.
A qualified supervisor is on-site throughout all operations. Every crew member holds stop-work authority — if something looks wrong, work stops. No production pressure overrides a safety concern at Hard Reach Environmental.
Project close-out includes a full safety and compliance documentation package: waste manifests, permits, incident reports (we maintain clean records), and a photo record of the site from start to finish. Clients receive this package before final invoice.
Every Hard Reach Environmental project is planned and executed in compliance with applicable Ontario provincial legislation and regulations. Municipal and commercial clients can rely on us to know the rules — and follow them.
In ecologically sensitive areas, our low-impact extraction methods eliminate the use of heavy equipment entirely. Hand-carry removal, vacuum extraction, and lightweight rigging allow us to clean sites without compacting soil, damaging root zones, or disturbing sensitive habitat. Environmental protection isn't only a regulatory obligation — it's the reason we exist.
PPE and equipment selection is hazard-specific, not generic. The gear on every Hard Reach Environmental site is matched to the actual risks present — assessed before each mobilization, not guessed from the office.
Half and full-face respirators with appropriate cartridges for dust, organics, and biohazard environments. Air quality monitoring determines minimum protection level before entry.
Cut-resistant and puncture-resistant gloves are mandatory where sharps or metal debris are present. Kevlar-lined options deployed for high-risk debris environments.
Full-body harnesses, lanyards, and redundant anchor systems on all elevated and slope operations. Equipment is load-tested and inspected before each use — no exceptions.
Multi-gas monitors (O₂, CO, H₂S, LEL) deployed in all confined and semi-confined environments. Continuous monitoring throughout entry — not just at the door.
Municipal and commercial clients routinely require WSIB clearance certificates, certificates of insurance, and safety plan documentation before project award. We have these ready to go. Contact us and we'll send them the same day.
